INTRODUCING
Michael Barrett
Supervisor Engraving Research and Development
TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY WORKING AT THE PERTH MINT
I started 31 years ago in burnishing, and from there I worked in inspection, packing, lacquering, press room, pad printing, die polishing, rolling and gauging, and casting. I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to train in Tool & Die manufacturing as a 3D Engraver.
Here I helped move the engraving department into the future by improving the CNC machine, and developing modelling techniques and laser engraving.
DESCRIBE A DAY IN YOUR ROLE
My day varies quite a lot which is what keeps me coming back. First thing in the morning, I see how the Laser Engraving team are going, then check how the CNC machine for the master tooling is progressing. From there I work on Research and Development, including researching new techniques and working on new innovative projects.
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB?
The Perth Mint is a specialised manufacturer meaning there is a very small pool of experience globally for the work we do. This means that it’ s a constant cycle of developing and making improvements to stay ahead of the competition.
