The sands of time
Obverse
The invention of the hourglass is often credited to Liutprand , an eighth century French monk .
The earliest known evidence of its use is recorded in Italian painter Ambrogio Lorenzetti ’ s 1388 masterpiece the Allegory of Good Government .
The hourglass is comprised of two bulbs of glass connected by a narrow neck . Fine sand flows through the neck from one bulb to the other , allowing the user to accurately measure an interval of time .
Representing the passage of time for hundreds of years , the image of an hourglass remains significant in modern culture . As the ‘ sands of time ’ slip away , it ’ s a powerful symbolic reminder of the transience of all things .
