TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AT THE PERTH MINT
I started working with the Mint in 2003 as one of three Coin Designers. Since then, I have been involved with over 350 projects and transitioned into a more leadership-focused role.
DESCRIBE A DAY IN YOUR ROLE
Working on a project can include many stages; from researching subject matter and iterating ideas, to creating illustrations and designs from concept to completion, and designing typographic logos and layouts for packaging. Alongside this, I am involved with reviewing coin samples to ensure that they meet our standards, allocating projects to the Designers, and providing support and guidance for the team. I help to make the studio environment more productive and allow the Design Team to create the wonderful, amazing work that they are renowned for.
WHAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST SINCE JOINING THE MINT?
We had half the size of the Coin Designing team than we do now, but took up twice the space. We were using pen and paper and inks and paints back then, so we needed more space to do the job. Our process has changed a lot. It was labour intensive then – working on paper and transferring designs to the dies rather than doing most of it digitally as we do now.
