One of 24 diurnal raptor species in Australia, the wedge-tailed eagle is Australia ' s largest bird of prey, with a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres. Their nests, often perched high in the tallest trees of their surroundings, can weigh up to 400 kilograms and measure up to 2 metres across and 3 metres deep.

The coin’ s reverse design portrays a standing wedge-tailed eagle with outstretched wings. Struck in ultra high relief, the coin is minted on a concave surface to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die.

This is the tenth wedge-tailed eagle design for The Perth Mint by renowned American sculptor and engraver, John M. Mercanti. As 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti produced more coin and medal designs than any other employee in the organisation’ s history.
