The quokka, a small wallaby-like marsupial, holds a special place in Australia ' s natural heritage. It possesses cultural significance to the Noongar people, the traditional custodians of south-west Australia. They are known as ' gwaga ' in the Noongar language and are part of a region rich in Dreaming stories tied to the land and wildlife.
Known for their friendly demeanour and signature ' smiling ' appearance, quokkas are primarily found on Rottnest Island, a pest-free sanctuary that supports an estimated 12,000 quokkas and attracts global visitors for unique experiences like the famed ' quokka selfie.'
