The snake is significant in traditional Chinese culture as one of 12 animals that participated in the Emperor ’ s Great Race , held to determine the order of their appearance in the lunar calendar .
A dominant creature said to control nature , the snake finished sixth and has subsequently reigned during every sixth year in the 12-year lunar cycle – including 1953 , 1965 , 1977 , 1989 , 2001 , 2013 and 2025 .
