INTRODUCING
Lucas Bowers
Coin Designer
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A COIN DESIGNER ?
I have always been fascinated by the art of coins and bank notes , and as an artist it ’ s a very aspirational notion that you could create artwork that could potentially last hundreds if not thousands of years . Having previously worked in fashion , I gained more interest in working with metals through things like belt buckles and jewellery , so when the opportunity arose to join the Mint in 2016 , I leapt at it .
HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS ?
Being a very technical and specific art form , there isn ’ t really any other way of studying coin design except on the job . Different metals , sizes , weights and reliefs have different properties and potentials . Initially the learning curve was huge and so exciting . Even with all the experience I have gained in the field , not a day goes by that I don ’ t feel like I ’ m learning something new .
WHAT ' S THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB ?
Trying to switch off ! My brain finds the strangest times to suddenly have little moments of inspiration for creative ideas I ’ ve been developing . I make sure I always have a notebook or my iPad in my bag handy .
