INTRODUCING

Aleysha Howarth

Coin Designer
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A COIN DESIGNER ?
Seeing and being in awe of art brings me pure joy . I remember seeing Claude Monet ’ s artwork and almost weeping because it was so beautiful . Everything about being a coin designer started from there .
HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS ?
My love of drawing began when I was about 8 years old . I wrote and illustrated my first book at school . As an adult , I stumbled across a creative project that was being spearheaded by a retired British Army Colonel Edmund ( Ted ) Dowling who had a love of theatre and maritime history . He quickly realised that I was creative , and we collaborated on creating set designs , maritime history dioramas and paintings . I then studied at Perth Art and Design school and completed my qualifications as an Illustrator and Graphic Designer .
WHAT ' S THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB ?
I would say beginning a coin concept and staring at the dreaded blank page ! I ’ m self-conscious when it comes to sketching out initial coin concepts . Even presenting polished designs still rattles me because they don ’ t always dazzle the project managers , so it ’ s back to the drawing board .
