Yin yang is the ancient belief that opposing , yet balancing forces govern the cosmos . Yin is earth , female , water , dark ; Yang is heaven , male , fire , light . The dynamic interplay between these and all other complementary forces creates the world we live in and who we are .
The yin yang symbol is the visual representation of this duality . A circle is divided into two tear-shaped halves , its black side is yin , its white side is yang . Both halves include a small part of the opposing element , demonstrating their inseparability .
The symbol is often paired with koi fish for added potency . Revered for their beauty and serenity , koi are synonymous with harmony and happiness . In Chinese culture they also represent perseverance and strength .
